Racist bullying soars in Edinburgh |

Reports of racist bullying in Edinburgh schools have risen in the past year according to a new report. During the school term, an average of 30 cases of racist bullying are reported every month, but this may be only the tip of the iceberg as Edinburgh’s education department admits a culture of 'under-reporting' whilst anti-racism groups in Scotland believe that only one in four cases are being brought to light. Beatbullying’s Interfaith scheme recognises and celebrates differences and suggests that all faiths should be positively endorsed, encouraging young people from different backgrounds to work together for the common good, building bridges between people of different faiths with a view to overcome interfaith bullying, bigotry and intolerance.

Teenage girls are feeling pressured to live up to sexual ideals rendering them unhappy, according to the 'A Generation Under Stress' report published yesterday. The girls questioned felt sexual pressure from boys at school and have said that they have felt worse about themselves after looking at pictures of celebrities and models in magazines and on websites. Girls as young as 10 also felt pressure to be thin, take drugs and have plastic surgery. This comes as local authorities released figures showing that the number of pupils disciplined for sexual offences has increased by nearly 20% to 3,080 cases that include bullying, assault, abuse, and harassment. According to the statistics, English schools suspend 200 students for sexual bullying incidents each day. Beatbullying is the only charity that has been working with young people on the issue of sexual bullying and how we can tackle it. Beatbullying’s Streetwise programme is an awareness raising and primary prevention strategy aimed at children and young people. The programme educates young people around the issues, causes and risks relating to peer to peer grooming, sexual bullying and unhealthy relationships. An engaging and challenging project, Streetwise deals with very difficult and contemporary personal safety and awareness issues head on.
