Punishment or Prevention? |
|
Research has been published indicating that tough sentences are not an
effective way of persuading teenagers to stop carrying knives. It reveals that young offenders
believe tough sentences are only meant to scare them, and they do not deter
them from carrying knives, saying they need them for protection. You can read more here .
What do you think? Would the threat of going to prison stop you from carrying a knife if you felt scared? Or do you think that we should do more prevention work to stop people carrying knives, instead of simply threatening to punish those that do?

There was a bit in the news last week about the Government needing to give advice to schools on how to tackle extremism and terrorism. That behaviour is, as it says, extreme, but are there problems because of religious and cultural tensions in schools? Are some young people singled out and targeted because of their background? Have a look at our Interfaith programme adnd check out our findings in November. In the meantime, if you’ve got something to say about bullying because of religion or background, let us know. Is it a problem, or does everyone respect each other’s faith and culture?
Meanwhile, a small study conducted recently states that many overweight people in Britain experience bullying, but the bullies are often alos obese. Apeearance has always been an easy target for a bully, so does it matter what the bully looks like? Why do you think that an overweight person might take the mick out of someone else's weight, even if they are the same size?
