What is CyberMentors? It's about tackling bullying and cyberbullying online and keeping young people like you safe. Millions of you use social networking, mobile and text messaging services. CyberMentors creates an army of young people who help and support their peers in an online virtual community, as well as on mobiles and other devices, helping to safeguard themselves and act as mentors and guides to young people they meet online when chatting, surfing and just generally having fun. It's funded and ready to go! CyberMentors will be rolled out through the secondary schools network and the National Union of Students nationwide. By 2011, all 3000 secondary schools in the UK will be fully running the programme. It means a minimum of 150,000 schools-based mentors and a further 20,000 further and higher education students will be working with you to keep cyberspace safe for you. This network of young mentors will be the front line in dealing with incidents of bullying offline and online, whether that incident is at school, out in the community, on social networking sites, messaging services, mobile phones, virtual communities or any other online environment. The network will be Beatbullying’s eyes and ears and will assist young people being bullied across the UK. In a climate where cyber safety and cyberbullying are high on the news and government agenda, CyberMentors will be a strongly welcomed initiative, allowing our partners to demonstrate their commitment to keeping children and young people safe online.
